Wild Waters in Boksburg
Wild Waters in Boksburg is billed as “the beach within reach” for Johannesburgers. It’s open in spring and summer for the hot summer months to let big kids, little kids and grown-ups frolic around the water slides and pools.
Half an hour out of Johannesburg, it’s pretty easy to get to and when there’s no traffic over the weekend it’s a breeze. It’s so close to the airport that you constantly see aeroplanes fly off to their destinations if you peer up towards the sky, which sets the scene for an oddly amusing situation.
The place is popular and well maintained. There are facilities for visitors to have braais or picnics. Or there’s a takeaway kiosk for chips and cold-drinks and easy meals like boerewors rolls if you want to buy lunch. But most important are the rides. There are big slides and small ones. Large sparkling pools and a tidal pool, which every hour is spruced up with some fake waves. It’s not as sophisticated as Sun City, but it’s far closer, and it’s more cost effective.
It costs R150 a head for adults (and kids over 8) to enter and R80 for children between two and seven. It’s probably best to call on the day to confirm whether it’s open because of the weather. And if you’re thinking of trying it out, head there before the Christmas season when it will no doubt be packed from morning till late afternoon.
