‘The Heart Has Many Rooms’ at Everard Read
You can still catch Sanell Aggenbach’s new exhibition The Heart Has Many Rooms on at the Everard Read Gallery until August 24th. It’s all about the various features of affection and it has a certain element of intimacy about it.
The exhibition consists of monochromatic paintings, which are of an intimate nature. There are tender studies in intimacy where some images are painted on canvas shaped as folded fabric. As the gallery explains, Aggenbach has reinterpreted Michelangelo’s Pieta by echoing the drapes of Mary’s tunic, Christ’s pale flesh and the composition of forms. Madre Pieta offers a more playful reimagining of Michelangelo’s original: the Madonna and Child replaced by two plush toys cast in bronze. The sculpture stands two-metres tall; its hard, polished surface coloured in deep warm tones.
