Proud Mary oozes start quality in vibey Rosebank
Proud Mary is one of those restaurants that oozes star quality. In the once-again vibey hub of Rosebank this oasis of casual, breezy glam has décor worth drooling over, and food to match. From the same team that created La Boqueria in Parktown North, Proud Mary pulls those inclined to beautiful spaces and enticing food.
Chef Christo Nortier has worked in the UK and Dubai, most notably at Jamie Oliver HQ in its prime. It’s billed as a ‘modern eatery and wine bar’ and its rave reviews are warranted. Presentation of food is gorgeous, and the food itself isn’t overly fussy, but at the same time creative, colourful and above all, tasty. Vegans & vegetarians can feel loved, as can meat eaters.
They term their style refined dining, rather than fine dining. It’s about small plates, hearty café plates, steaks, and there’s a raw seafood bar includes seafood dishes including oysters, sea bass ceviche, tartare and sashimi.
We had the aubergine & tamarind labneh (turmeric & cumin, candied pistachios, preserved lemon, green chilli, fresh mint and dill) and the edamame & pea bruschetta (mint spring peas, baba ghanoush).
You’ll find Proud Mary on the ground floor of The Bank, the latest multipurpose development in the neighbourhood on the corner of Tyrwhitt and Sturdee Avenues in TheZone@Rosebank. The building will be home of South Africa’s first Voco hotel, which opens in June.
