Island living in Hyde Park
The sun is out longer these days, which means it’s time to head on out. And The Island Bar in Hyde Park is one of the city’s most appealing spots for late afternoon sundowners.
Craft beers, wines, cocktails and gins are on tap in abundance, and there’s a newly launched tapas and a la carte menu. What beguiled us recently are their tapas, traditionally a Spanish accompaniment to drinks in the late afternoon.
It’s all about sharing ‘finger food’ dishes – and the range is suited to vegetarians, meat eaters as well as those who prefer to avoid carbs. Not just little bitsy tastes, but proper small burgers, salads and delicious desserts. These tapas options have an African kick. Think buttermilk chicken burger on a taste sesame bun, buttermilk-fried chicken breast and oxtail steam buns with pulled oxtail. (Turns out the oxtail is so popular in the main Luce restaurant that chef Grant van der Riet decided to create a derivative of it).
The veggie offerings are also sensational. This includes sticky sesame cauliflower bites, crispy zucchini fries, crumbed mushrooms and corn. Our personal standouts were the fried three-cheese ravioli and the pumpkin fritters with cinnamon syrup and ice cream.
The bar pumps especially on Thursday to Sunday evenings. Oh, and let’s just mention that view one more time…
