Aurum’s back with a fabulous summer menu

There’s little doubt that Aurum Restaurant will be top of list for those who like destination dining. The restaurant opened with great expectation just over a year ago, but like every other place had to go into hibernation through lockdown.
Now they’re back in full force, and have launched their new summer menu.
The Aurum environment is all about bold statements. It’s cavernous and grand and stylish with gold mesh hanging from the ceiling. At the same time, you can sit in voluptuous, soft seating booths and separate yourselves off quite easily from the world at large (not to mention other diners).
Aurum is the Latin word for gold and this is echoed in the colour palette that features through the restaurant, as well as alluding to Joburg’s ‘City of Gold’ with its sense of fast style and association with the good things in life.
Paulo Santo (of Gemelli fame) heads the restaurant. The new menu has moved away from making a particular ingredient the hero of the dish, and aims to bring all the ingredients in the dish to life. The focus is on all things fresh and champion each element in its simplicity.
The asparagus starter ( grilled asparagus, lemon skin with shavings of gruyere and crispy kale) left us gasping for more. The verdict on the salmon and lamb rack were sensational. The desserts weren’t up to the standard of the starters and main. The citrus and white chocolate (passion fruit, yuzu, meringue and lime sorbet) was far too tart for even a dedicated dessert-lover. And the vegan colada was a bite-sized lolly.
There is a global wine list as well as a wine library and though pairings are not on the menu, they can be requested.
Aurum is on the seventh floor of the tallest building in Africa, The Leonardo in the buzzy centre of Joburg’s wealthiest square mile in Sandton, near the JSE.
The Leonardo is at 75 Maude Street, Sandown. Book online at or email or call 082-5360100.
